EXTeNDED LeARniNG
Luqman also advised his son on the importance of Tawhid. He explained to his son that Tawhid not only means believing in one God but also placing the pleasure of this one God before anyone else. This means that we must never try and please people, our aim in life should be to please our creator only.
Read the story below and answer the questions that follow.
One day, Luqman told his son to ride a donkey. While the son rode the donkey Luqman walked behind him on foot. They travelled in this way for some distance. People saw this and on seeing the son on the donkey, one of them said: ‘What a rude and bad boy! The old father is walking on foot and the young son is sitting comfortably on the donkey. This is no way to show respect to one’s father!’
Luqman and his son heard this. The son came down from the donkey and Luqman rode it. After some time, they came across another group of people. On seeing the father riding the donkey, the elder of the group said: ‘This is not the way to bring up a son! You make him walk in the hot sun, while you sit comfortably on the donkey?!’
Luqman paid attention to what the people said and came down from the donkey. Both father and son walked on foot and the donkey walked in front. They went a little further. People saw them and said: ‘How foolish you are?! You walk behind a donkey! Why don’t you ride it?’
They both sat on the donkey and went a little further. The next group of people who saw them said:
‘It is very unkind and cruel of you two to ride on the poor donkey. The little animal can hardly take all your weight!’
