EXTeNDED LeARniNG
Our ears are an open connection to the outside world. If we do not like the way something looks, we can close our eyes and it will disappear. But if we do not like a sound, we cannot seal our ears and shut out the sound entirely. Sound enters our body through the ears, and in a way our ears are pathways to our souls. Whatever we hear with our ears enters our souls.
Someone was backbiting another person in the presence of Imam Hasan (a) when he was very young. Hearing that Imam Ali (a) said to his son as a guidance for us,
“O my dear son! Purify your ears from this. He looked into the filthiest of what is in his heart and poured it into you.”
This belief is not exclusive to Muslims. Many religious Christians also believe that the music they listen to penetrates their souls. Hence, they only listen to or sing God-related gospel or Christian music. Judaism also stipulates certain guidelines for the music that is permissible.
