MODULE 8E-07 You may recall
You may recall from one of your previous lessons, when a person passes away and moves forward on their journey to the next world, he/she is referred to as marhum/marhumah. The plural term is marhumin. This word comes from the root word rahmah, which means ‘mercy’. When a person dies, we hope and pray they have entered into Allah’s mercy, and that is why they are referred to as marhum.
Once a person dies, they can no longer change their book of deeds themselves. Their time for doing any good or bad actions has passed. However, they are still able to receive gifts that can benefit them in barzakh from people that are still alive, such as family and friends. The concept of sending good deeds forward for the souls of the marhumin is known as isal ath-thawab.
