In this lesson, we will learn about the two struggles of the human being to keep the message of the anbiya and a’immah (a) alive. The word for struggle in Arabic is jihad. Jihad is an important tenet of faith. According to Rasulullah (s), there are two types of jihad:

  • Jihad al-asghar, which is the minor struggle, is an armed struggle to defend Islam and Muslims.
  • Jihad al-akbar, which is the major spiritual struggle, is the constant struggle against one’s self and one’s desires in order to submit totally to Allah.

The above two terms come from a famous hadith of Rasulullah (s). He had once sent a group of Muslims on a military expedition and when they came back, he said to them: ‘Welcome to those who have returned from jihad
al-asghar and now what awaits them is jihad al-akbar.’ When he was asked what this greater jihad was, he said: ‘Jihad against the self.’
